Diarrhea during menstruation: causes and remedies

It is common for many women to suffer from diarrhea during the menstrual phase of their cycle, between 30 and 40% have intestinal disorders on those days. In addition to diarrhea, we can also experience the opposite case such as constipation, although to a lesser extent. Women suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome see these intestinal problems increased during menstruation.

Why do we have diarrhea during menstruation?

The increase in hormone levels causes the muscles of the intestinal wall to move and contract in a different way than usual. Prostaglandins are responsible for causing movements in the uterus so that the endometrium detaches and is expelled in the form of menstruation. If the level of this hormone is higher than usual, the uterine contractions will be more intense and painful. Prostaglandins travel through the blood and when this excess of these hormones reaches other organs of the body, such as the intestines, they also suffer these strong contractions, which can cause diarrhea.

Remedies against diarrhea in menstruation

  1. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  2. Foods rich in beneficial bacteria, such as certain yogurts.
  3. Put heat on the belly to calm the pain and cramps caused by bowel movement.
  4. Rest properly.
  5. Try to be mentally relaxed and avoid stress, since the mind is in direct contact with our gut and everything psychic that happens to us is reflected in it.
  6. If our problem is constipation, eat foods rich in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables.

If this problem becomes a serious disorder that prevents us from leading a normal life, we should go to our doctor so that he can prescribe an adequate treatment.
