Toxic Shock Syndrome due to the use of tampons: symptoms and prevention

Toxic Shock Syndrome is caused by a bacterial toxin. The bacterium that releases this toxin is Staphylococcus Aureus. This bacterium is found in our body in a normal way, in the armpits, vagina and perineum, without causing any problem.

Complications come when we use highly absorbent tampons and for longer than we should, since tampons help the synthesis of the toxin, creating an ideal environment for it to develop.

Symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome

We should see a doctor if we notice that we have any of the following symptoms:

  • Confusion and dizziness.
  • Diarrhea and general malaise.
  • High fever.
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Skin eruptions and desquamation.
  • Red eyes, mouth and throat.

How to prevent Toxic Shock Syndrome

  • We must use tampons with the lowest possible absorbency and in no case be with them for more than 8 hours, it is advisable to change them every 4.
  • Alternating tampons with pads will also be beneficial, we can use pads, for example, when we are at home and tampons when we go out.
